Dry skin is a condition encountered extremely frequently in general practice, especially by dermatologists. Specific skin diseases, like atopic dermatitis and ichthyosis, are characterized by dry skin, but skin dryness is also widely present in the general population who have otherwise healthy skin. For the individual, dry skin is experienced as unpleasant skin roughness, with itching and a sensation of tightness. This condition may degrade quality of life considerably. Dry skin is present predominantly in temperate and cold climates during the winter months, but it may also be precipitated by factors such as aggressive cleansing of the skin, psychological stress and ageing.
Whilst in the past the pathophysiological events associated with dry skin have been well described, but not logically linked, the cyclical model of dry skin (as presented in this publication) sets out to explain the induction, propagation and perpetuation of the condition in an holistic way. This allows both a better understanding of the mechanisms involved and a rational approach to intervention via the use of cosmetic products to modulate the 'vicious dry skin cycle' at multiple points. Finally, this model provides the basis for teaching the patient and consumer how to deal with skin prone to dryness in a preventive way a valuable tool for badly needed 'patient empowerment' in dermatology.
