Short acting opioids have traditionally been the treatment of choice for moderate to severe acute pain. In particular, there has been little controversy over the efficacy of using oploids for the treatment of nociceptive/inflammatory pain in acute and sub acute conditions.
Long acting oplold therapy has traditionally been reserved for the treatment of cancer patients. However, over the past decade a considerable body of evidencebased literature has accumulated which supports the use of long acting opiolds in chronic non malignant pain states. A recent review supported the selected use of opioids in the treatment of patients with chronic nociceptive and neuropathic pain syndromes [ I ].
These proceedings review the use of oploids for the treatment of cancer pain as well as chronic pain. Important issues and topics of consideration including the use of adjuvant therapies and controversies surrounding the use of oplolds in the treatment of chronic pain conditions are also discussed.
