Dermatologists like me continually bemoan the lack of evidence behind the claims made for their products by cosmetic companies, while our patients tend not to use some of our prescribed treatments because of their real, or perceived, lack of cosmetic acceptability.
When it comes to shampoos, many consumers may be torn between thinking, 'It may work, but it's much too harsh', and wondering, 'It feels all right, but is it actually doing anything?'
Advances in our knowledge of the aetiology of dandruff and in shampoo technology over the past few decades have, in reality, enabled both effectiveness against dandruff and tolerance, even by those with 'sensitive' scalps, to be combined in one product.
This timely document, produced by the Royal Society of Medicine Press with the sponsorship of Procter & Gamble, clearly sets out just how these dual characteristics have been achievable in the development of a new anti dandruff shampoo. I can commend its close reading to all those with an interest in the effective control of dandruff, a widespread everyday nuisance that is now readily treatable. (Richard JG Rycroft MD FRCP FFOM DTH)
