“The term COPD implies in adults the common type of chronic lung disease with airways obstruction usually related to heavy smoking, and excludes other generalized conditions such as asthma, or localized conditions such as bronchiectasis. The patient may of course have more than one lung disease at the same time. For example, COPID and carcinoma of the lung may well coexist in a heavy smoker and some patients may have COP13 and asthma.
The clinical features of COPD are usually quite straightforward and care should be taken to evaluate those features of the illness that are not typical.”
